Application of Bamboo-based/Agricultural Waste Cellulose Nanocrystal (CNC) Structural Color Update

· Industry News

Bamboo-based/agricultural waste cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) structural color essentially involves breaking down cellulose from bamboo, vegetable trimmings, sugarcane leaves, cotton stalks, etc., into nanoscale rod-like whiskers. When dried, these whiskers self-assemble into a chiral nematic phase (like a spiral staircase), reflecting light through their physical structure to produce color — without any dye molecules, heavy metals, and with full biodegradability.

🏷️How It Works in Anti-Counterfeiting Inks & Why It's Hard to Forge

Mechanism of Color & Security

  • A CNC aqueous dispersion is printed or coated; during drying, evaporation-induced self-assembly (EISA) forms a chiral nematic structure with a pitch of 100–300 nm. This produces Bragg reflection of visible light, creating an iridescent effect that shifts color as the viewing angle changes (angle-dependent coloration).
  • The pitch can be tuned via CNC concentration, temperature, humidity, or blending with polymers (e.g., HPC), enabling custom colors from red to violet.
  • The microscopic helical precision (1–100 nm) far exceeds the resolution of engraving plates or scanners. Counterfeit printing can only produce static single colors, not dynamic iridescence, making it visually verifiable without UV lamps.

Formulation & Progress

  • Water-based CNC photonic crystal ink: A joint effort between Henan University of Animal Husbandry and Economy and Henan China Tobacco (Golden Leaf brand) , launched in early 2026, targeting high-end cigarette packaging and luxury goods packaging with zero benzene-ketone VOCs.
  • Composite smart ink: A route from Beijing Institute of Technology / International Centre for Bamboo and Rattan modifies bamboo-derived CNF via alkenyl esterification + thiol-ene click chemistry, attaching fluorescent groups to create a "structural color + fluorescence quenching" dual-channel system for Fe³⁺ detection and intelligent anti-counterfeiting inks.
  • Industry side: Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University's team led by Yuan Zhanhui transferred its bamboo-based CNC pearlescent technology for 10 million RMB to Zhundian New Materials, which plans a 120 million RMB production line. The technology explicitly lists anti-counterfeiting inks as one of four key application directions (alongside cosmetics, automotive/furniture coatings, and modified plastics).

Current Shortcomings

Pure CNC films are brittle, hydrophilic (easily damaged by moisture), and prone to cracking and unevenness in large-area coating. The industry addresses this by adding HPC/PVA, surface silanization, and roll-to-roll directional alignment. Zhundian's route uses roll-to-roll winding plus directed deposition to solve uniformity.

🪅Applications in Trendy Toys & Home Decoration

Trendy Toys / Art Collectibles

  • The agricultural-waste route project "Liuguang Yise" (using vegetable trimmings and sugarcane leaves) flexibly switches the same process to produce structural-color pastes suitable for trendy toy shells, limited-edition statue coatings, etc. The color shifts with viewing angle, avoiding heavy metal migration risks associated with azo pigments in PVC toys.
  • Lighter than mica pearlescent pigments and free of mining-related concerns, it suits a dual selling point of "eco-friendly narrative + collectible-grade luster." Samples have already been delivered to apparel, home decor, and toy manufacturers.

Home Decorative Surfaces

  • Decorative Coatings / Artistic Paints: Researchers at Northeast Forestry University (Dong et al.) crushed brittle iridescent CNC films into tunable photonic pigments for decorative paints and nail art, proving that CNC structural color can directly serve as aggregate for artistic wall paints — UV-stable because physical color doesn't degrade under light.
  • Furniture Finishes & Building Materials: Bamboo-based CNC pearlescent pigments are positioned for furniture lacquers and exterior architectural paints, offering refractive index and sparkle comparable to imported mica pearlescent pigments while being fully biodegradable within 60 days in soil — aligning with China's "bamboo replaces plastic" policy.
  • Smart Labels / Lighting: By introducing temperature-sensitive or humidity-sensitive small molecules into CNC composite films, the structural color shifts with environmental changes, enabling applications like coasters, lampshades, and humidity indicator stickers that combine decoration with functionality.

Design Differentiator

Traditional pigments work by absorbing light — visually static and prone to fading under UV. CNC structural color works by light interference within nano-scale helices: turning the same surface by 30° shifts the color from gold-green to magenta. This dynamic quality is exactly what trendy toys and high-end home decor are willing to pay a premium for.
